<note>This study focused on the grammatical errors and move structure found in the undergraduate students’ English thesis abstracts during the academic year of 2018-2020 in Mathematics Department at Nusa Cendana University. There are two research problems formulated in this study, they are 1) ‘What are the grammatical errors found in the English thesis abstracts written by the undergraduate students of Mathematics Department of Nusa Cendana University?’ and 2) ‘How are the move structures of the English thesis abstracts written by the undergraduate students of Mathematics Department of Nusa Cendana University?’
his study is descriptive research that examined undergraduate students’ English thesis abstracts in 2018-2020 in Mathematics Department at Nusa Cendana University, using two different approaches of analysis. First, it was applied an error analysis technique proposed Corder (in Ellis, 1994). The errors were classified into the four types of grammatical erros, which are omission, addition, misformation, and misordering proposed by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen (2012). Furthermore, the analysis was continued with move structure analysis by adopting the framework of Bhatia’s (2013) four-move structure and Swales & Feak’s (2014) five-move structure. There were 469 errors found in the undergraduate thesis abstracts in 2018-2020. Omission has the highest error rate with 193 errors (41.2%), followed by misformation with 158 errors (33.7%), addition with 83 errors (17.7%), and last, misordering with 35 errors (7.4%). Meanwhile, it is also found that 23 out of 30 (76.7%) of the English thesis abstracts do not align with either Bhatia’s (2013) four-move structure or Swales & Feak’s (2014) five-move structure. According to the research results, the undergraduate students' English thesis abstracts show a lack of grammatical precision and accuracy. It indicates that the students require additional background knowledge in order to fully comprehend the principle of grammatical concepts. Students also need to understand and apply the rhetorical structures commonly used in their writing of abstracts.
Keywords: abstract, analysis, grammar, move structure</note>
