<note>This research discusses the implementation of Skimming and Scanning in reading and the advantages of skimming and scanning used in the reading process. The objectives of this study are (1) to explain the implementation of skimming and scanning techniques in second-semester students. (2) to describe the advantages of skimming and scanning strategies in speed reading. (3) to find out the potential problems faced by students. This research used a descriptive qualitative method. The number of subjects in this study was 20 students. The author chose class C of 4 classes in the second semester as the research object. In this study, the author used two instruments. The instruments are interviews and observations. The author analyzes the data by identifying, classifying, describing, and calculating the data. In skimming, there are seven methods used, including paying attention to titles and subtitles, reading the first sentence of each remaining paragraph, checking out the first and the final paragraph, paying attention to illustrations or infographics, reading abstract, reading chapter summaries and no need to read word by word. In scanning seven ways are used including Determining keywords, take a quick glance, Read the information around the keyword, looking for the words that are bolded, italicized, or printed differently from the rest of the text, pay attention to illustrations, tables, or pictures related to the information, make sure to search in the right chapter or sub-chapter section and pay attention to the order of letters. The advantages are shortening reading time, increasing vocabulary, and building the intention to read. The problems faced by students are lack of vocabulary, lack of reading intention, boring media for reading, and lack of support for reading. The results show that most of the subjects of this study have many problems in reading such as not having good reading skills, and lack of vocabulary, intention, or motivation in reading especially how to apply reading strategies such as skimming and scanning.
