<note>This study describes students’ abilities in using personal pronouns in descriptive text by the third-grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Kupang Timur in the academic year 2022-2023. The problem of this research was to determine what students' abilities were in using personal pronouns in descriptive text, and the second was to determine what students' difficulties were in using personal pronouns in descriptive text, with the goal of this study being to determine students' abilities and difficulties in using personal pronouns. The subject of this study was the third grade of SMP Negeri Kupang Timur. The writer just takes 20% of 160 students, or 32 students, as the sample for this research. The writer used a random sample to take the sample. The descriptive qualitative research method was used in this study, and the writer collected data through tests and interviews. The result of this study indicates that the ability of students in the third grade at SMP Negeri 3 Kupang Timur is in the poor category with a percentage of 6.25%. This calculation indicated that the number of students who failed the test was extremely high, and most of the students' criteria for success were poor. Meanwhile, for students' difficulties, the writer found that students have difficulties in distinguish the types of personal pronouns, students’ discovery of the function of personal pronouns, in this case is possessive adjective and reflexive pronouns, and the last students interested in learning English was low.
