This research is entitled “A Study of Slang Words in Bruno Mars’ Song Lyrics” The study discusses slang words used in Bruno Mars's song lyrics. The research design of this study is a descriptive qualitative method. In this study, the theory of the word-formation process by George Yule (1986) is used to analyze the formation process of each slang word. The researcher only examines fifteen of Bruno Mars's song lyrics. They are The Lazy Song, and It Will Rain, Just the Way You Are, Our First Time, Locked Out of Heaven, Gorilla, Runaway Baby, Marry You, Grenade, Treasure, Somewhere in Brooklyn, Count on Me, Natalie, Show Me, Liquor Store Blues. There consists of three research problems: (1) What are the types of slang words used by Bruno Mars’ in his song lyrics, (2) What are dominant slang words found in Bruno Mars’ song lyrics, (3) What are the meaning of slang words found in Bruno Mars’ song lyrics. The data were analyzed, and the research tried to find an identity of the slang word in lyrics; the analysis showed that: “Cause you know how I like it to use a dirty little lover”. The lover is backformation because a lover is a noun that comes from love (verb). The meaning of lover in this song is a partner in a sexual relationship outside marriage. The researcher hopes that this research can enrich the researcher's comprehension of slang words and also an understanding of the dominant slang word used by Bruno Mars in song lyrics song. The benefits of this research in teaching and learning English are as references for those who want to enrich their knowledge about types of slang, especially types of slang words based on George Yule types including Backformation, conversation, derivation, prefixes and suffixes, and multiple processes that happened around us.
