<note>This thesis is entitled A Study on Grammatical Errors in Writing Recount Text by the First Grade Students of SMAN 5 Kupang in the Academic Year 2022/2023. The aims of the study were (1) to identify the grammatical errors committed by the first-grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang in writing recount text. (2) to know the grammatical errors mostly made by the first-grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang in writing recount text. (3) to describe the possible cause of errors made by the first-grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang in writing recount text. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The subject of this research was first grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang in the academic year 2022/2023. The writer used 32 students of class X-G to be the subject of this research. The data collection techniques were writing test and questionnaire. The writer classified the types of grammatical errors committed by the students based on Dulay’s (1982) theory. The errors were classified into omission, addition, misformation, and misordering based on surface strategy taxonomy. The finding showed that 117 errors were identified in students’ recount text. The errors consisted of 21 errors (18%) of omission errors, 77 errors (66%) of addition errors, 7 errors (6%) of misformation errors, and 12 errors (10%) of misordering errors. The grammatical errors mostly made by the first grade students in writing recount text is related to addition error. There were three causes of errors made by the students in writing recount text. Those are carelessness, first language interference, and translation.
