<note>This thesis is entitled “DESCRIPTION OF MOTIVATION OF THE STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI 1 SABU TENGAH IN LEARNING ENGLISH” This study aimed to know students' motivation in learning English at SMP Negeri 1 Sabu Tengah. This research used a qualitative descriptive method. The subject of this research was 26 students in class VIIB of the SMP Negeri 1 Sabu Tengah. This research used a questionnaire and interview as instruments to collect the data. The results of this study could be seen from the students' answers to questionnaires and interviews. The questionnaire results showed that 112 students who strongly agree, 132 choose to agree, 206 choose neutral, 63 choose to disagree, and 7 choose to strongly agree. The total score of students' motivation to learn English was 70.34%. Students had intrinsic and extrinsic motivation to learn English, the students enjoy learning English because there was an inner urge and desire to learn English, so they were motivated to learn English. And the results of the interview the student motivation in learning English showed that students had the desire and drove to learn English. Several effective ways that can be used to motivate students include giving grades in the form of individual or group activities, giving prizes, and praise. Based on the results of questionnaires and interviews, students were motivated because they had a lot of desire or encouragement to learn English. Most of the students mentioned that what motivates them to learn English was to improve their skills, to get a good job, to get a university degree, and that language was important and could help them in many ways, such as communicating widely with other people.
