<note>This study is entitled, The Correlational Study Between Frequency of Listening to English Songs and English Vocabulary Mastery of the Third Semester Students of EnglishvStudy Program of Nusa Cendana University in the Academic Year of 2020/202, is triggered by whether or not there is a significant correlation between frequency of listening to English songs and English vocabulary mastery. The questions or hypotheses are (1) null hypothesis: no significant correlation exists between frequency in listening to English songs and Vocabulary mastery. (2) Alternative hypothesis: there is a significant correlation between the frequency of listening to English songs and Vocabulary mastery. This research
employed a correlational method by using a quantitative approach. There are two variables in this research. Student’s frequency of listening to English songs (X) and English vocabulary mastery (Y). The students’ frequency of listening to English songs was obtained from the questionnaire while the students’ vocabulary mastery was obtained from vocabulary scores. The participants of this research are the third semester students (class E) of the English study program of Nusa Cendana University in academic year 2020/2021 which consists of 37 students. The calculation result of the correlation between vocabulary mastery and frequency of listening to English songs, in general, is 0.032 (r xy = 0.032). From the T distribution table, the value of r with n (sample size) 37 is far below 0.20 at the 0.10 critical level. This means that there is no significant correlation between the frequency of listening to English songs and English vocabulary mastery. However, it was also found that listening to certain genres of English songs such as rock and rap songs has a positive contribution to the development of students’ vocabulary mastery. The correlation between frequency of listening to the two song genres and vocabulary mastery is 0.629 and 0.413 respectively, meaning that the correlation between vocabulary mastery and frequency of listening to rock songs and rap songs is significant. Therefore, it has been suggested in this research report that English learners and English teachers should be selective in selecting English songs as media or resources for English learning.</note>
