Communication is the way of people to express ideas, thoughts, feelings, or emotions through verbal and non-verbal ways. It is the way of people to interact each other. By communication people are able to telling information or express expressions such as requesting, suggesting, thanking, apologizing, promising, etc. Every communication has a certain purpose or contains intention which convey through sentences or utterances. In linguistic studies, this phenomenon is called speech act. Austine in 1962 differ the type of speech act into three kinds; locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary speech act. This study analyzed the illocutionary speech act performed by Mary as the main character in “Gifted 2017” movie, using the theory of speech act by John Searle (1966), which classified the kind of speech act especially illocutionary act into five types (representative, directive, commisive, expressive, and declarative). This study used qualitative research method and the data presented descriptively since it describes and explains the illocutionary acts used by the main character of Gifted 2017 movie. This study analyzed the meaning of every utterances produced by Mary related to illocutionary act based on the context. The findings show that there are four types of illocutionary act used by Mary; representative, directive, commisive, and expressive. Directive illocutionary act is the most type which used by Mary in Gifted movie. It consists of denying, agreeing, stating, complaining, forecasting, informing and suggesting.
