<note>This study analyzes the ability to use modal tag questions by the twelfth-grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang in the academic year 2023/2024. The research problems are what are the twefth-grade students SMA Negeri 2 Kupang abilities in using modal tag questions? and what difficulties are faced by the twelfth-grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang in using modal tag questions?. The main objective of this research is to determine the level of ability to use modal tag questions, and determine the areas of difficulty faced. Data was obtained through tests and questionnaires. The subjects of this research were class XII IPA 3 students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang. The results of the analysis show that students are able to use tag questions and this can be seen from the scores obtained. There were 2 students (6.06%) who completed the MMC in the excellent category, 9 students (27.27%) were in the good category, 12 students (36.36%) were in the fair category, and 10 students (30.30%) were in the poor category. These calculations show that the number of students who fail the exam is very high, and most of the students' success criteria are poor. Meanwhile, the author found that students had difficulty understanding modal question tags,
positive sentences became negative, negative sentences became positive, and finally students' interest in learning English was low.</note>
