<note>This study was conducted to find out the techniques used by English teachers in teaching vocabulary to seventh-grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Kupang, the way the teachers applied the techniques and the problems faced by teachers in teaching vocabulary. This research used a descriptive qualitative method. Data collection was carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation. The subjects of this research were English teachers at seventh-grade of SMP Negeri 8 Kupang. The findings of the study showed that there are seven techniques used by seventh-grade of English teachers in SMP Negeri 8 Kupang to improve students’ vocabulary, those are: translation, choosing students randomly to answer the question, correcting students’ pronunciation, the use of a dictionary, explaining the material, the use of LCD and English song. The way the teachers applied the techniques are: 1) the teachers chose students randomly to answer the questions, 2) the first teacher always corrected students’ pronunciation when the students read the conversations, 3) the students open a dictionary when they find difficult words then memorize it and the first teacher wrote the words on the whiteboard when they found new words then followed by students, 4) the teachers explained the materials and spoke in English then translated into Indonesian language in teaching and learning process, 5) the third teacher used  LCD to displayed the materials, pictures and videos in teaching English vocabulary, and 6) the third teacher used Alphabet song to open class. Some problems faced by the teachers in teaching vocabulary are: 1) lack of time in the teaching and learning process, 2) poor vocabulary of the students, and 3) less concentration of students in the teaching and learning process.
