An Analysis between Politeness Strategies Used by the Eight-Grade Students and Nine-Grade Students at SMP Negeri 15 Kupang By: Sriwulandari Here Wila 
The aims of this study are (1) to describe politeness strategies used by teacher and students at SMP Negeri 15 Kupang, (2) to describe kinds of politeness strategies used by eight-grade students and nine-grade students at SMP Negeri 15 Kupang, and (3) to describe similarities and differences of the politeness strategies used by the eight-grade students and nine-grade students at SMP Negeri 15 Kupang. This study applied descriptive qualitative method in the process of conducting the research. The research was done in SMP Negeri 15 Kupang, specifically the eightgrade students and nine-grade students in October, 2023. The result of this research shows that there is politeness strategies used at SMP Negeri 15 Kupang. There are four strategies employed by the teacher and the students in class. The strategies are bald on record, positive politeness strategy, negative politeness strategy, and off record strategy. The researcher found some of the data about politeness strategy that are used by the teacher and the students. The total numbers of the data from class 8B are 9 utterances, the researcher found 1 data used bald on record strategy, 3 data used positive politeness strategy and 5 data used negative politeness strategy. The total numbers of the data from class 9A are 10 utterances, the researcher found 2 data used bald on record, 4 data used positive politeness, 1 data used negative politeness strategy and 3 data used off record. The data shows that the students preferred positive politeness strategy to other strategies in conducting communication with the teacher during teaching process. In addition, there is similarity between the eight-grade students and nine-grade students. The eight-grade students and nine-grade students is using positive politeness strategy. In addition to found the similarity, there are also differences between the eight-grade students and nine-grade students. The researcher found the eight-grade students is using negative politeness strategy and the nine-grade students are using Bald on Record strategy and Off Record strategy.
