<note>This thesis is entitled: ‘A Study on English Reading Motivation and Comprehension of the Second-Grade Students of SMAN 4 Kupang in the academic year 2023/2024’. The problems of the research are what motivates students to read English texts, and what is reading comprehension level of the students. The research aims to find out students’ motivation to read English texts, and to know the level of reading comprehension of the students. The method used was qualitative. The research was conducted in SMAN 4 Kupang. There were 33 students in the second-grade of IPA 5 SMAN 4 Kupang. The instrument used was interview, tests, and questionnaires. Interviews were conducted with 33 students, the tests used were multiple choice and essay, and the questionnaire was used only to support the results of the interview with four options, namely, agree, strongly agree, disagree, and strongly disagree. The results show that the average student's reading comprehension score from the test is 81 (out of 100) which is good. There are two major motivations for students, intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. The Intrinsic motivation in reading English texts is reading for pleasure to relieve their boredom in their spare time such as reading novels, short stories, folklore, and fiction stories. The extrinsic motivation in reading English texts is that many students read to get good grades, students also read because they are told by their teachers so they do not get punished. In addition, many students read because they also want to be good readers.
