This thesis is entitled: ‘A Study on Metaphors in Tonis Mafet Mamonet in South Central Timor Regency’. The problem of this study are: first, what types of metaphor are used in tonis mafet mamonet. Second, what are the meanings of metaphor used in tonis mafet mamonet. The aims of this study are to find out the types of metaphor which are used in tonis mafet mamonet, and to describe the meanings of metaphor which are used in tonis mafet mamonet. This study applied a descriptive qualitative method in the process of obtaining data. The research was conducted in Niki-Niki village, Central Amanuban sub-district, South Central Timor regency in March, 2023. The data resource of this research was gained from tonis mafet mamonet, which were collected by interviewing the three selected informants. The researcher collected the data by using observation and interview techniques. The researcher analyzed the data by using transcribing, identifying and describing techniques. The result shows that: (1) there are three types of metaphors found in tonis mafet mamonet, such as: (a) Structural Metaphor. For example: manas (the sun), sonaf (palace), tuna sufan alekot (beautiful blooming flower). (b) Orientational Metaphor. For example: non koit (entering from the back door of the house), tnana’ (in the middle of something), luman sonat (empty). (c) Ontological Metaphor. For example: nhaek (stand), bunu hauno (prohibition sign), natain (binding). (2) All metaphors in tonis mafet mamonet contain primary meaning, which means the word or phrases have its literal definition in the dictionary, and secondary meaning, which means the word or phrases can be understood by the context as well. For example, the word manas literally means the sun, but in the context of tonis mafet mamonet, it refers to the hearer. Keywords: Metaphor, Tonis Mafet Mamonet.
