ABSTRACT This study is entitled “Comparison between Student’s Steps In Writing English Poetry and It’s Comparison With Proposed By Hayes, J.R., & Flower, L. This study was conducted to answer the research questions: 1. What are the steps of writing poetry by the fifth - semester students in comparison with the process and steps introduced by Flower and Hayes. The writer took 55 students that has passed poetry subject at five semester at English Study Program Of Nusa Cendana to be the research subjects. The aims of this study were to find out and identify the steps followed by students writing English poetry in comparison with those proposed by Hayes, J. R., & Flower, L. The method used in this study was comparative study. The data of this study were qualitative. The data were obtained from the students’ questionnaire. From the data obtained, the writer analyzed and found out that 65.45% students only stop at the second stage in writing as proposed by Hayes and Flower. And 34.54 % students do the three stages as proposed by Hayes and Flower. Besides that, 45.45 % students do preparation ( read reference ) before planning stages.
