This research aims to find out how Grammar Translation Method can improve understanding of simple past tense of the tenth-grade students’ of SMKS TECMATIK INFORMATIKA PLUS, NOELBAKI KUPANG NTT. This study aims at finding out how the Grammar Translation Method can improve students’ understanding of Simple past tense. This research is a Classroom Action Research. The subjects of the study were 20 students of grade 10 of SMKS TECMATIK INFORMATIKA PLUS, NOELBAKI KUPANG NTT. The instruments used were tests consisting of post-tests in cycle 1 and that in cycle 2. The technique of analyzing the data of this research was applied by quantitative and qualitative data analysis. The quantitative data were used to know about students’ achievement based on their scores. The qualitative data were analyzed based on the data obtained from the observation sheet. The result of this research showed that using grammar translation method was good. It was proven by the improvement of the test in cycle 1 and cycle 2. The result of the cycle 1 was 63.6 and the result of cycle 2 was 80.9. Therefore, it is suggested that grammar translation method can be used as an alternative method in teaching grammar, especially simple past tense.
