<note>This thesis is entitled "Semiotic Analysis of Ritual Speech Used in Hode Ilu Ritual of Lewolaga Traditional Community". This research was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) what are the ritual expression that are used in Hode Ilu Ritual? (2) What are the semiotic meanings of Hode Ilu ritual ? The aims of this research are: (1) To mention the ritual expression that are used in the Hode Ilu ritual in Lewolaga community. (2) to explain the semiotic meanings of Hode Ilu ritual in Lewolaga community. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. It is used to describe the expressions used in Hode Ilu ritual and to describe the semiotic meanings of Hode Ilu ritual. The research was conducted in Lewolaga village, Titehena District, East Flores Regency. Data was taken from five informants. Data collection techniques are interviews, observation, notes, and recording. The data obtained is processed through Transcription and translation, selection, and analysis. The research results show that (1). This ritual has been passed down from generation to generation and is carried out once a year, so that people believe this ritual is carried out to prevent families living in a village from danger so that the person concerned can stay alive protection of ancestors. (2). The Hode Ilu ritual is carried out using Hode Ilu symbol (saliva accaptence), which has three stages of customary implementation as follows :The first phase of preparation is follows Phase invite Pana rekadu in “customary elders Klake kebel’eng of the four (4) main tribes ,“and old custom klake kelama who are sent from small tribes ”in order to inform tribal chiefs to carry out traditional ceremonies. Phase timing ta’o Elu: At this phase, the customary elders of the main tribe, together with the delegated traditional elders of the messenger from small tribes, held a deliberation to determine the timing of the ceremony. Preparation of ritual completeness Sadi Geke Sudi Salang Phase. At this stage all the ritual completeness is prepared. The second phase of implementation as follows: Elo Phase, Sorong Neing Phase, Pohi Niha, Belo Howe, Pa’u Gota. (In the implementation phase, it begins with giving offerings to the creator and the ancestors).The third final phase is the Hode Ilu phase (as the peak ceremony ending with the process of saliva acceptance as a symbol of blessing and protection). The Lewolaga people still preserve their culture and maintain this tradition to this day.
