<note>The  purpose  of  this  study  was  to  know  whether  there  is  a  significant  correlation between  mastery  of  simple  past  and  writing  recount  text  of  the  second  semester students  of  English  study  program  of  Nusa  Cendana  university.  The  sample  of  this study  are  26  students  taken  from  Class  D  of  Second  semester  of  English  Study program  of  Nusa  Cendana  University.  The  method  used  in  this  study  was  a quantitative  method  and  the  technique  used  in  this  study  was  a  correlational technique.  In  collecting  the  data,  the  documentation  of  students’  writing  scores  and the test of grammar are used. The score of writing and grammar were collected from test, conducted multiple choice for grammar mastery and recount text by students for writing  test.  The  result  of  this  study  shows  that  there  is  a  very  low  correlation between  students’  mastery  of  simple  past  and  ability  in  writing  recount  text.  It  is proved  by  the  rxy  (0,125)  is  lower  r  count  (0,61).  It  is  considered  that  the  null hypothesis  (Ho)  is  accepted  and  the  alternative  hypothesis  (Ha)  is  rejected.  In conclusion,  there  is  negative  correlation  between  students’  grammar  mastery  of simple past and ability in writing recount text.
