<note>ABSTRACT

The goal of this research is to describe how the use of Small Group Discussion increases 10th grade students’ ability in writing a descriptive text in SMA Katolik St. Carolus Kupang by focusing on the research problem: How does Small Group Discussion increase students’ ability in writing? This research used CAR (Classroom Action Research) as the method with 18 students from class A of tenth-grade students as the subject of this research. The data were collected through a post-test, observation, and interview. It was found that the student’s difficulty in writing was overcome by the use of Small Group Discussion method, including difficulties in spelling the right words, grammar, and lack of vocabulary. It is supported by the results of post-test, observation and interview, which showed that the students felt very helpful, enjoyed, and were excited in writing using Small Group Discussion. The student’s ability in writing descriptive text were increased, it is proven by the average score in post-test which was 76,39 – it is higher than the passing grade which was 75. Considering these points, the use of Small Group Discussion method to increase students’ ability in writing descriptive texts is effective.
