<note>This thesis is entitled: ‘The Effectiveness of Using Cue Cards to Improve Writing Skills of The Eleventh-Grade Students of SMAN 5 Kupang’. The problems of the research are: (1) is cue card effective in improving students’ writing skill and (2) to what extent does cue card improve students’ writing skill. The objectives of the research are: (1) to know the effectiveness of cue cards to improves students’ writing skill and (2) to know to what extent cue card improve students’ writing skill. The method used was a descriptive research 
design, involving observation, pre-test and post-test. The research was conducted to eleventh grade classes in SMAN 5 Kupang. There are 11 classes of eleventh-grade, but the researcher chose randomly one class, that is class XI H with 21 students as samples. The test was an essay test. The researcher analyzed the data using scoring rubric of Jacobs et.al (1981) and the observation check list about students’ behavior during the implementation of teaching writing with cue cards carried out two times, after pre-test and before post-test. The mean score of every aspect in the pre-test is: content (17.8), organization (11.2), vocabulary (11.9), grammar (13.7), and mechanics (2.3). While the mean score of every aspect in the post-test is: content (22), organization (15), vocabulary (14.4), grammar (17.5), and mechanics (3.3). There was a significant improvement from the comparison as the mean score in the post-test are gained in every aspects, content (4.2), organization (3.8), vocabulary (2.5), grammar (3.8) and mechanics (1). It means 
that cue card is effective to improve the writing skill of SMAN 5 Kupang students’.
