<note>This study, ‘An Analysis of Grammatical Errors In Writing Recount Text Of Second-Grade Students Of Smpn 5 Kupang’, focuses on analysing students’ grammatical errors in writing a recount text. It deals with two research problems, they are: (1) What are the grammatical errors committed by students in writing recount text? (2) What are the difficulties faced by student in wirting recount text? This study aims to find out grammatical errors made by students in writing a recount text and to find out the difficulties faced by student in writing recount text. Descriptive qualitative method was used as a method in conducting this research. The eighth-grade students of SMPN 5 Kupang was chosen as the population of research which consists of ten classes with a total number of 312 students. There were 25 students of class VIIIB were selected as the sample of this research. The data were collected by establishing a test. The result of the data analysis showed that many students make mistakes in surface strategy taxonomy when writing recount text (omission, addition, misformation, misodering, phonological error and lexical error or word choice). Those errors are suspected because of the adjustment between students’ native language and foreign language. Moreover, different grammatical structure of these two languages, lack of vocabulary, lack of capability of express idea also cause the students made errors in their writing.
