This thesis is Entitled “An analysis of Cohesive Devices in Barack Obama’s Speech at University of Indonesia”. Speech is an example of expressive discourse that contains meaning and is composed of a series of sentences, diction, and grammatical, or contextual relations. This research, therefore, is designed to found the types of Barack Obama’s Speech at University of Indonesia. A descriptive method is employed in this research and data obtained were Analysed qualitatively through identification and describing. The technique used for data collection is the observation. The result shows that grammatical cohesive devices include referents, substitutions, ellipsis, and conjunctions. It appears that all grammatical cohesive devices and lexical cohesive devices are used, although in different proportions. The grammatical cohesive devices that seem to dominate are a reference, followed by a conjunction, substitution, and ellipsis. Meanwhile, the lexical cohesive devices that seem to dominate are repetition, followed by antonym, synonym and Collocation. Keywords: Cohesion Devices, Grammatical, Barack Obama, Lexical, Speech.
