This study explores the illocutionary acts portrayed in the movie "42," focusing on the different types and their implications in the context of Jackie Robinson's historic integration into Major League Baseball. The primary objective is to identify and analyze the various illocutionary acts within the film's dialogues. Utilizing a qualitative research method, which involves descriptive analysis of both written and oral data, the study examines 20 instances of illocutionary acts. These are categorized into 4 assertive acts, 10 directive acts, 2 commissive acts, 2 expressive acts, and 2 declarative acts. The findings reveal that the predominance of directive acts is significant, as they are intended to elicit specific actions from the listener. These directives function to order, command, request, advise, and recommend, reflecting the numerous actions and decisions required throughout the movie. These illocutionary acts collectively highlight the complex social dynamics and challenges faced by Robinson, emphasizing themes of racial discrimination and the bravery required to confront and change entrenched societal norms.
