This research is about the factors that affecting speaking anxiety experienced by the first-grade students. This research aims to analyze the factors affecting students’ speaking anxiety and to find out the strategies used by the students to overcome their speaking anxiety. The writer has formulated two research questions in this research as follows: (1) What are the factors that affected students speaking anxiety experienced by the first-grade students of SMAN 3 Kota Kupang? (2) What strategies are used by the first-grade students of SMAN 3 Kota Kupang to overcome their speaking anxiety? This research was been qualitative research. The respondents of this research were thirty students from class 10 IPA 3 of SMAN 3 Kota Kupang. The writer distributed a questionnaire and conducted an interview. The writer analyzed the result of the students’ questionnaire and also interviewed 12 students. The writer presented data in the form of a narrative description. This study found that from the three major types of speaking anxiety, the most type that is often experienced by the first-grade students is test anxiety, followed by fear of negative evaluation, and the last is communicative apprehension and the implemented strategy that they used to overcome their problems in speaking.
