This research investigates gender stereotypes through the characterization of Hua Mulan in Disney's live-action film Mulan (2020). Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the study focuses on identifying masculine and feminine traits represented by Mulan and how these traits reflect or challenge traditional gender stereotypes. The analysis applies the theory of gender stereotypes proposed by Brannon (2016), along with gender trait classifications from Copenhaver (2002) and Evans & Davies (2009). Characterization is examined using five techniques by Boggs and Petrie (2008), including appearance, dialogue, external action, internal action, and reactions of other characters. The findings reveal that Mulan demonstrates six masculine-coded traits: assertiveness, bravery, risk-taking, independence, leadership, and strategic thinking, which appear more dominant in her characterization. Additionally, three feminine-coded traits are identified: emotional expression, nurturing, and empathy. While Mulan's character initially conforms to traditional gender expectations, her development throughout the film challenges rigid gender boundaries by combining traditionally masculine and feminine qualities. This study concludes that Mulan (2020) presents a progressive female representation, portraying a protagonist who defies conventional gender roles. The film suggests that strength, leadership, and empathy are not exclusive to any gender, but are human qualities that can coexist within one character.
