This research is based on the phenomenon of code mixing commonly found in multilingual societies, including in literary works such as Bumi Manusia by Pramoedya Ananta Toer. The novel reflects colonial life where various languages, such as Indonesian, Javanese and Dutch are used. Code mixing in this novel illustrates the cultural and social dynamics of the time, especially in communication across social classes. The aim of this study is to identify the types of code mixing and the factors that cause them in Bumi Manusia. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with a sociolinguistic approach. Data were collected through document analysis and analyzed using the Miles and Hubermen model.The findings reveal two types of code mixing: outer code mixing (38 data) involving foreign languages such as Dutch, English, French and Hokkien and inner code mixing (16 data) involving regional languages like Javanese and Madurese. The causes of code mixing include social status, group identity, conversational context and cultural influence. The study concludes that code mixing as a language of communication and also a reflection of social identity and colonial history in the novel. This research contributes to linguistic studies, especially in sociolinguistic studies in understanding the use of language in social life in a historical context.
