<note>This study investigated the effectiveness of using English songs to improve listening skills among fourth-semester English education students at Nusa Cendana University. The research addressed two main problems: (1) how students' listening ability is before and after using English songs, and (2) is using English songs effective in learning the listening ability of the fourth-semester students at the English Education study program, Nusa Cendana University? A quantitative experimental method with a pre-test and post-test design was employed. The participants included 10 fourth-semester students from the 2024/2025 academic year. Data was collected through listening tests, specifically gap-filling exercises, using the English songs "Perfect" by Ed Sheeran and "All of Me" by John Legend. SPSS was used for statistical analysis, with scores assessed on a 0–100 scale.
The results showed a significant improvement in students’ average scores from 63.7 in the pre-test to 75.4 in the post-test, indicating an 11.7% improvement. Before the treatment, the average score was in the “Fair” category, indicating that most students struggled with understanding English songs. After the intervention, the average score moved into the “Good” category, showing enhanced ability in identifying missing words, comprehending context, and following spoken English. A paired sample t-test revealed a statistically significant difference (t = 8.07, p = 0.000 < 0.05), confirming the effectiveness of using English songs in learning listening skills. All students demonstrated positive score development, with an average increase of 11.7 points. In conclusion, the use of English songs significantly enhanced students' listening abilities and proved to be an effective and enjoyable instructional strategy in language classrooms.
