ABSTRACT JULIANTI WENYI 1801020242 This study examines the used of personification as a literary device in Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol”. The research aims to identify the types of personification and analyze their functions in enhancing the narrative, themes, and characterization in the novel. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study categorizes personification into two types: “prosopographia” (attributing human traits to abstract or inanimate entities) and “prosopopoeia” (giving human form or voice to non-human entities). The findings reveal that Dickens employs personification extensively to bring non-human elements to life, reinforce moral themes, and deepen the reader’s engagement. For instance, the “cold within (Scrooge)” is depicted as actively shaping his physical appearance, mirroring his emotional isolation. The Ghosts of Christmas symbolize abstract concepts like time and morality, making them tangible and impactful. Personification also serves to create atmosphere, emphasize themes of redemption and social critique, and reflect Scrooge’s psychological transformation. The study concludes that personification in “A Christmas Carol” is not merely decorative but integral to Dickens' narrative style, enriching the novel’s emotional resonance and moral message. The research contributes to literary analysis by highlighting how figurative language can amplify thematic depth and reader immersion. Suggestions for further research include comparative studies of personification in Dickens' other works and its pedagogical applications in literature education.
