The aims of this study are (1) To identify the types of errors committed by eighth graders of SMP N 5 Kota Kupang in academic year 2023/2024. (2) To identify the causes of errors committed by eighth graders of SMP N 5 Kota Kupang in academic year 2023/2024. This study used qualitative descriptive method. The subject of this study was the eighth graders of SMP N 5 Kota Kupang in academic year 2023/2024. The eight graders consisted of 1 class with the total numbers as many 30 students. The writer used a test technique to select 30 participants, who were students from class A. The data collection techniques used in this study were a test, and an interview. The writer classified the types of errors committed by students based on Dulay’s (1982) theory, specifically the surface strategy taxonomy. The results indicated that there were 30 totals of errors made by eighth graders of SMP N 5 Kota Kupang in their writing narrative text. They were 5 errors (14%) of omission errors, 6 errors (17%) of addition errors, 16 errors (46%) of misformation errors, 8 errors (23 %) of misordering errors. Based on the students answer in interview, the writer discovered some causes of errors in the use of writing narrative text: the limited knowledge and understanding related to writing narrative text, lack of motivation and insufficient practice. In addition, the researcher identified three sources of errors. They were carelessness, interference from first language, and translation. Keywords: Error Analysis, Narrative Text, Writing.
