<note>The main character is the central figure that most determines and influences the course of a story. The portrayal of characters in a story often represents the internal conflicts that exist in the human mind. Internal conflict is closely related to various psychological conditions, one of them is Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD). This condition is characterized by the existence of self-defense mechanisms such as fight, flight, freeze, and fawn responses when facing traumatic events as experienced by Slater Shaw as the major character in the novel Had To Be You by Robin Kaye. This research aims to find out (1) what are the forms of trauma responses experienced by Slater Shaw as the major character in the novel Had To Be You by Robin Kaye and (2) how are the trauma responses dealt with by Slater Shaw as the major character using Pete Walker’s 4Fs/4F psychological approach. This study employs a qualitative research method, utilizing documentation and note-taking as data collection techniques to gather textual data from the novel. The data is then analyzed using content analysis for analyzing and interpreting textual data. The research results show that Slater Shaw experienced a fight response of 7 occurrences, a flight response of 2 occurrences, a freeze response of 6 occurrences, and a fawn response of 1 occurrence. Slater healed from the trauma by accepting his past, making peace with the situation, and sharing all his past experiences with his loved ones, especially his girlfriend.

Keywords: major character; novel; psychological condition; 4Fs/4F approach.</note>
