This study is entitled “A Study on Connotative Meaning of Sumbanese Traditional Songs by Kun Mally”. The study was conducted to answer the problems, such as; (1) What are the lyrics that contain connotative meaning? (2) What are the kinds of connotative meanings of words/phrases used in the lyrics? The aims are to find out the lyrics that contained denotative and connotative meaning and to describe the kinds of connotative meaning of words/phrases used in the lyrics of the Sumbanese Traditional songs by Kun Mally. In conducting this research the writer used descriptive qualitative method. In collecting the data, the writer focused on identifying the words and phrases that contain denotative and connotative meaning and classify them based on theory of J. N. Hook (in Widarso 1989) which divides the connotative meaning into positive connotative, negative connotative and neutral connotative. Then the writer used the theory of Geoffrey Leech (1981) to analyze the connotative meaning in the song lyrics by Kun Mally. The result showed that from the 5 songs there are 16 words and 10 phrases contained connotative meaning. There are positive connotative (14 words, 5 phrases) and negative connotative (2 words, 5 phrases). There is no kind of neutral connotative found in this study.
