<note>The purpose of this study was to describe the strategy of teaching writing
used by English teachers at Junior High Schools at Kota Kupang and students'
efforts in practicing writing skills during online learning. This research uses a
descriptive qualitative with respondents who were English teachers and Junior
Highs students. The data collection techniques were interviews and document
studies. The results showed that the strategies used to teach writing are the
Assignment and Picture series methods in teaching texts via online and offline
learning. The assignment is the primary method used by all teachers, whereas
picture series is used by only a few teachers depending on the text they teach. These
two methods are existing methods that have been implemented in face-to-face
learning in the classroom before this pandemic. It shows that the emergence of the
Covid-19 pandemic, which changed the learning method from face-to-face to
online, initially shocked teachers, so they could not have new strategies specifically
for teaching writing. As for learning resources and the media used, textbooks are
the primary learning resources, and some teachers also use learning videos. The
learning media used are WhatsApp, Zoom, Google Classroom, and Google meets
for online learning. As for the evaluation related to student writing, teachers cannot
evaluate optimally because students' writing work is influenced by others, often the
result of their work is the result of copy and pasting from google. Another finding
is that students do not put much effort into practicing writing skills during this
pandemic. Only one student seriously worked on the video related to the text being
taught. In addition, when they face difficulties in writing, students are reluctant to
ask the teacher.
