This study is entitled: “A Study on Compound Words in Malay Larantuka”. It aims to answering two questions: (1). what types of compound words are there in Malay Larantuka? (2). what are the word classes used to form the various compound words in Malay Larantuka? The objectives of this study are to identify the compound words in Malay Larantuka and also to describe and explain the word class of the compound words in Malay Larantuka. The study was conducted in Lebao, Puken Tobi Wangin Bao Village, Larantuka Sub-district of East Flores Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. It is a qualitative study. The data was collected through observation, interview and note-taking from some informants. For this reason, a number of sentences were prepared in written form. To analyze the data, the theory of morphology was applied. The data obtained were analyzed through steps of selection, listing, translation, and interpretation of the formal linguistic meaning. The result of this study shows that in Malay Larantuka there are some morphemes that form compound words, for example the word kemamu nagi and tikam turo which means “young man and fence for a procession”. The types of compound words in Malay Larantuka are as follows: (1). Endocentric compounds and Copulative compounds. (2). Malay Larantuka allows several types of combinations of different word classes (N: noun, V: verb, Adj: adjective). There are eight combination of word class used to form the various compound words in Malay Larantuka: N + N, N + V, N + Adj, V + V, V + N, V + Adj, Adj + V and Adj + Adj. Based on the finding the suggestions are offered to other researchers to do researches related to compound words in Malay Larantuka so the result can be read by the local people or native speakers and others who are interested in Malay Larantuka.
