ABSTRACT This research is entitled.“A Study on symbols found in “Umma Kalada” Traditional House In West Sumba”.The focus of this research is the meanings of symbols found in the traditional house “Umma Kalada”. The objectives of this study are to find out the symbols and the meaning of the symbols in the traditional house “Umma Kalada”. All the data gained are analyzed using the descriptive qualitative method. The instruments used in this study are observation, interview, documentation and recording using elicitation techniques from two informants. The results of this study showed that there are seventeen symbols found in the traditional house “Umma Kalada” they are: ‘Nobbu’, as a symbol of heritage materials, ‘Toda’ as a symbol of deterrent in a war, ‘Mamuli’ as a symbol of women, ‘Lekki’ as a symbol of heart, ‘Toko Umma’ as a symbol of highest position, ‘kadu umma’ as a symbol of long life, ‘winno monno utta’ as symbols of respect, ‘kolaka’ as a symbol to store betel nuts and rice, ‘Kaleku’ as a symbol of a traditional leader, Ngengi Wawi’ as a symbol of interesting,‘kadu Karabo’ as a symbol of sacrificial offering, ‘Talla’ as a symbol of connection, ‘Wurro Tana’ as a symbol of to storage of holy water, ‘Pari’i’ as a symbol of the number of families, ‘Katopo’ machete as symbols of the soul mate, ‘Rabuka’ as a symbol of the belly button, ‘Biedu’ drumas a symbol of command.
