This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The total of population was 319 students. The writer selected E class out of the eight classes of the eighth semester as the sample. In this study, the writer used three instruments. The first instrument was test in the form of translation test for answering the first and second research questions. For the third research questions, the writer used questionnaire and interview. The writer analyzed the data by identifying, classifying, describing, and calculating the data. The finding showed that 389 errors were identified as grammatical errors. The identified grammatical errors were classified based on Dulay’s theory, namely surface strategy taxonomy. There were four types of grammatical errors committed by the eighth semester students in E class of English study program in translating Indonesian narrative text into English. They were 112 errors (29%) of omission errors, 35 errors (9%) of addition errors, 235 errors (60%) of misformation errors, and 7 errors (2%) of misordering errors. Furthermore, the most common of grammatical error committed by the students was misformation errors, where such errors included the misformation of pronoun (30 errors), verb (173 errors), gerund (3 errors), singular and plural noun form (12 errors), article (1 error), adverb (2), and preposition (14 errors). Based on the students’ answers to the questionnaire and interview, the writer found that there were three causes of error made by the students in translating Indonesian narrative text into English.
