<note>This thesis is entitled “ Reading skill strategies for second grade students of SMPN 19 KOTA KUPANG in school year 2021/2022”. The research problems are: what reading strategies are used by second grade students of SMPN 19 KOTA KUPANG in school year 2021/2022? And how effective are reading strategies used by second grade students of SMPN 19 KOTA KUPANG in school year 2021/2022? Based on the nature of the problem of this research is also to find out the improvement of students' reading comprehension through eight reading skill strategies, namely; choral reading, silent reading, extensive reading, intensive reading, skimming, scanning, supplementary reading, and reading for gist. The subjects of this study were second grade students with a total of 29 students as respondents. This research was conducted using classroom action. The data analysis technique used in this research is qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative data was taken from the question sheet. Quantitative data is taken from the test. The tests given to students were in the form of test1, test 2, and test 3. The results of data analysis showes that there was an increase in students' reading comprehension. This is shown from the average test 1 which is 48.97 applied by eight strategies, in table test 2 there is an increase in the average student test 2 which is 62.76. Besides on test 3 there was an increase in the average student which is 81.72. In addition, on test 1 there were 10.34% (3 of 29 students) who got higher than 75. In test 2, there were 13.79% (4 of 29 students) who got  score of higher than 75. In test 3, there were 75.86% (22 out of 29 students) who scored higher than 75. So the percentage of the total improvement from test 1 to test 3 was  75.86%.
