An Analysis Of Figurative Languages Used In “The Fault In Our Stars”, A Novel By John Green

This research was carried out by collecting relevant data and information about the topic or research problem from books and the internet that were available for analysis. Data collection was carried out in the following steps: reading the novel in its entirety, then selecting data using types of figurative language. Meanwhile, the data analysis steps are identifying and classifying data according to categories in figurative language, as well as analyzing and describing the contextual meaning of sentences or dialogue in the novel. The result shows that:
(1) There are six types of figurative language found in the novel The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, such as (a). Irony. For example: lucky, skeleton. (b). Hyperbole. For example: a balloon of a head, hundreds of times over the year. (c). Personification. For example: my lungs swimming. (d). Allusion. For example: Aristoteles or Cleopatra, Victorian Lady. (e). Simile. For example: crooked like his smile, sounded like a dragon breathing. (f). Metaphor. For example: collapse of our sun, heart of Jesus. (2) There are six contextual meaning of figurative language found in the novel The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, such as: (a). Irony. Example: lucky. The context means that something is said to tell someone that what they want will most likely not happen. (b). Hyperbole. Example: a balloon of a head. The context is Hazel realized that she had short, bobbed hair and chubby cheeks due to the side effects of medication, so she thought her head was the size of a balloon.
(c). Personification. Example: my lungs are swimming. The context means there is a lot of fluid in her lungs because of he oxygenation that occurs in him. (d). Allusion. Example: Aristoteles and Cleopatra. The context means even famous people will not remembered and everything will be vain. (e). Simile. Example: crooked like his smile. The context means Augutus‟s gait or the way he walks is slouching or it is not normal due to one of his prosthetic legs. (f). Metaphor. Example: collapse of our sun. The context is that all humans will die and everythng in this world is only temporary.
