An Analysis Of English Abbreviation In The Comment Section Of First We Feast Youtube Channel

Abbreviation is the process of removing some letters from some words to create another shorten form of the words. The abbreviations often appear and used by people on social media. First We Feast YouTube Channel is one of the most popular channel on YouTube that can be used as an object to explore a lot of Abbreviation on it. The aim of this research is to identify: (1) the abbreviations used in the comment section of First We Feast YouTube Channel; (2) those abbreviation stand for; and (3) the most dominant type of abbreviation used in the comment section of First We Feast YouTube Channel. This research used a descriptive qualitative method. The writer collected the source of data through the screenshot the comments that people left on the comment section of First We Feast YouTube Channel. In order to analyze the data, the writer applied theories by experts: Weakly (2006) and Schendl (2001) types of abbreviations. This research revealed there were 98 types of abbreviations wrote by the viewers of First We Feast YouTube Channel. The result findings showed that there were five types of abbreviations found based on Weakly (2006) and Schendl (2001). Contraction is the most dominant type of abbreviation that occur 319 times, followed by initialism 47 times, clipping word 27 times, acronyms 23 times, and blends 17 times. There are also some other abbreviations found but not included in these five types of abbreviations because the way they changed are different from these five types delivered by Weakly and Schendl. Those abbreviations are uncategorized.
