The Symbolic Meanings Of Buna Nunkolo In Dawanese Culture (A Semiotic Analysis)

The problems of this study are: (1) what are kinds of symbols that found in Nunkolo cloth weaving in nunkolo village, Nunkolo subdistric South Central Timor Regenc? (2)what are symbolic meaning of each symbols that contained in traditional cloth weaving in Nunkolo village, Nunkolo subdistric, South Central Timor Regency?. This study aims to: identify kinds of symbols in traditional cloth weaving in Nunkolo village South Central Timor Regency and to describe the symbolic meaning of each symbol that contained in traditional cloth weaving in Nunkolo village, South Central Timor Regency. This study used qualitative descriptive method. The research was conducted On Desember 2021 in Nunkolo village, South Central Timor Regency. The researcher collected the data by using techniques of observation, interview, documentation, and note taking. The researcher analyzed the data by using procedures, such as: identifying and describing. The result shows that: 1. there are five symbols found in Nunkolo cloth weaving in Nunkolo village South Central Timor Regency. They are: Buna Mnanu (long pattern motive), Bun Tuka(short pattern motive), Buna Kbubu (round pattern), Bun Karawang (butterfly pattern), Bun Hausufa (flowers pattern). There are also six basic colors found in Nunkolo cloth weaving like me (red), muti (white), metan (black), molo (yellow), mate (green), kanalu (blue). 2. The symbolic meanings of those symbols are:a. Buna Mnanu (Long pattern) is a symbol of Nunkolo woven fabric which has a broad meaning. It is called bunamnanu because in ancient times the southern mandate government had four governorships, namely Bone, Bana, Bokong, Manumuti. b. Bun Tuka(Short pattern) is part of the motive of Buna Mnanu which is strung together with the meaning that at the time of the renewal of the government the vetorans changed to sub-districts so that these four vetorans changed their names to sub-districts so that each sub-district took a part of this Buna Mnanu motif to become a typical motif of its own area.c. Buna Kbubu (round pattern) is the central motif of bunamnanu and also bun tuka. In the era of usif or the king of Buna, it symbolized the central kingdom or the gathering place of the four kevetorans namely Bone, Bana, Buttocks and Manumuti.d. Bun Karawang (X pattern/butterfly) symbol is a symbol of beauty, and step of life to get something and the lifesstrunggle. e. Bun Hausufa (flowers motive)is a symbol that has meaning of natural beauty of nunkolo which is filled with dense forests and mountains areas.
