The Use Of Stad Technique To Improve Reading Comprehension On Recount Text Of The Ninth Graders At SMPN 4 Kupang

The aims of this research were to know the implementation of STAD technique on recount text can improve reading comprehension, investigating whether STAD (Students Team Achievement Development) technique improve reading compherension of the ninth grade students at SMPN 4 Kupang. The ninth grade class E students of SMP Negeri 4 Kupang were chosen as the subject of this research. The method used in this thesis was quantitative and qualitative and research design was Class Action Research (CAR). The techniques of data collection were pre-test and post-test. The results show that the students’ scores increased significantly from pre-test to post-test. In pre-test, only 5% student that reached the Minimum Mastery Criteria, while in post-test it changed to 90%. Besides, the students’ mean score also improved from 17.25 to 49.25. This improvement happened because the implementation of STAD technique in reading comprehension. STAD is one type of cooperative learning that is simple and in its implementation includes 6 steps, namely preparation, presentation of material, group activities, quizzes, group awards and group change. STAD cooperative learning method is an alternative choice of learning methods that develops an active attitude, is able to develop lessons in discussion in groups and social interaction between students. This method can be applied in English lessons.
