ABSTRACT
AN ANALYSIS OF GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN THE USE OF ENGLISH
PASSIVE VOICE COMMITTED BY THE ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS
OF SMK N 1 LEWOLEBA
The objectives of this study are (1) to find out the grammatical errors that were
committed by the eleventh grade students of SMK N 1 Lewoleba in using English
Passive Voice. (2) To know the most grammatical features/grammatical items that the
students commit the errors on. (3) To know the possible causes of such grammatical
errors that are committed by the eleventh grade students of SMKN 1 Lewoleba. This
study used a descriptive qualitative method. The subject of this research was the eleventh
grade students of SMK N 1 Lewoleba in the academic year of 2021/2022. The eleventh
grade students consisted of 4 classes with the total number as many as 112 students. The
writer used a purposive sampling technique to select the participants, who were students
from Computer Network Engineering (TKJ) class, which had 27 students. The data
collection techniques used in this study were a test, questionnaire, and interview. The
writer classified the types of grammatical errors committed by the students based on
Dullay (1982) and Azar’s (1989) theories. The types of error in surface strategy
taxonomy in passive sentences were addition, omission, misformation past particple (V3),
subject-object, be and singular-plural and by phrase. The finding showed that there were
997 total of errors. They were misformation of past participle 305 errors from 997 total
of errors or 30.59%; subject-object 164 errors from 997 total of errors or 16.45%); Be
(162 errors from 997 total of errors or 16.25%); omission (107 errors from 997 total of
errors or 10.73 %); addition (92 errors from 997 total of errors or 9.23 %); by phrase (87
errors from 997 total of errors or 8.73 %), and singular-plural (80 errors from 997 total of
errors or 8.02%). Furthermore, the most common grammatical error committed by the
eleventh grade students was the misformation of past pasrticiple (V3). Based on the
students’ answers on the questionnaire and interview, the writer discovered some causes
of errors in the use of English passive voice: the lack of knowledge and understandingrelated to English passive voice, educational background, and less practice. In addition,
based on the students’ test result the writer found two sources of errors. They were
interlingual transfer and intralingual transfer. Therefore, this study is important for the
other researchers to conduct further research with the same object but in a different
perspective of passive voice because frequently the students have problems composing
sentences in the passive voice and often also still face difficulties in changing active into
passive voice.
