A Semiotic Analysis Of Traditional Motifs In East Sumba Regency

This result is a semiotic analysis of traditional motifs in east sumba regency. The problems of the study are: firstly, what are the symbols found in the traditional motifs in East Sumba Regency. Secondly, what are meanings of those symbols in traditional motifs in East Sumba Regency. Thirdly, what are the functions of those symbols. The aims of this research are: 1) To describe the kinds of symbols in the traditional motifs in East Sumba Regency. 2) To describe the meanings of symbols in traditional motifs in East Sumba Regency and 3) To describe the function of symbols in traditional motifs in East Sumba Regency. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The research was conducted in Prailiu village, East Sumba Regency on May’28 2022. The writer selected two informants as the data resource. This study used techniques of data collection like observation, interview, documentation, note taking. The data were analyzed by using identifying and describing techniques. . There are ten symbols found in traditional motifs in Each Sumba Regency. They are Mamuli (jewelry of Sumba), Njara (horse), Tau (human), Manu (rooster), Kabebak (butterfly), papanggang (tribal ceremony), Mahang (lion), Kaka (parrots), Ruhha (Deer), Mandu Hawurung (Dragon). The meanings of those symbols are, as follows :
a.) Mamuli symbol is a jewelry of Sumbanese and becomes a symbol of women (feminine). b.) Njara is characteristic cattle of Sumba Island that agile which is a symbol of manly and mighty. It means, njara symbol is a sign of agile, mighty, and mount, which is a symbol of virility, agility, heroism and high social status. c.) Tau (human) symbol is a symbol that elegant which is a symbol of God’s creation that plain and poor. A symbol of Sumbanese ancestor’s as a God’s creation that plain and poor. d.) Manu (rooster) is a beautiful symbol that is a symbol of morning or awareness. e.) Kabebak (butterfly) symbol is a symbol of beauty, process, and struggle to get something. f.) Papanggang (tribal ceremony) symbol is a symbol a new life after death. g.) Mahang is a wild animal that is a symbol of brave and assertiveness. h.) Kaka (parrot) is an endemic bird of Sumba Island that is a unique and interesting symbol which is a symbol of wise. It’s a symbol of dashing, wisdom, deliberation, and consensus. i.) Ruhha symbol is Strength symbol, which is a wild animal in Sumba Island. This is the symbol of strength which became a symbol to be faithful and never give up. j.) Mandu Hawurung is a symbol that Sumba people believe is a symbol of luck and strength. It is a unique and antique symbol that looks horrible, which is the symbol of victory, luck, and strength.
Functions of those symbols are as follows: a.) Mamuli (Jewelry of Sumba) is used by customs of sacred rituals such as marriage and death. b.) The horse is used as paymserve to payment of dowry in East Sumba. c.) Tau (Human) function to reject crime. d.) Manu (Rooster) is an alarm of Sumba people, who protective to wake humans up in the morning. e.) Kabebak (Butterfly) is a symbol of life’s struggle to get something that is beautiful. f.) Papanggang (Tribal Ceremony) life after the death in which an essential part of the consciousness or identity of an individual continues its existence after the death of his body. g.) Mahang (Lion) inside the literary indigenous Sumba, is not found, this proves that in East Sumba, Sumba generally has no lions. h.) Kaka (Parrots) the reflecting the souls of others Sumba in decision making various affairs, by way of deliberation for the vote. i.) Ruhha (Deer) function is can overcome the problems that occur in society. j.) Mandu Hawurung (Dragon) the dragon of refravel reflect greatness and rest.
