An Analysis Of Code Mixing Used By English Teachers Of SMPN 1 Sulamu, Kupang Regency In The Academic Year 2022/2023

This research is entitled “an analysis of code mixing used by the English teachers of SMPN 1 Sulamu in the academic year 2022/2023”. The writer conducted this research to answer these three questions: what are the types of code mixing used by English teachers in teaching learning process, why English teachers used code mixing in teaching learning process, and what types of code mixing are frequently used by English teachers. The aims are to know the type of code-mixing, the dominant type of code-mixing, and the reasons why the teachers used code-mixing in teaching- learning process at SMPN 1 Sulamu. The research method used in this research was descriptive qualitative by applying a naturalistic design. The subjects of this research were English teachers of SMPN 1 Sulamu. This research used observation and interviews as the instrument for collecting the data. The data were identified, analyzed, and described in a descriptive manner. The data analysis showed that there are three types of code-mixing used by English teachers in the teaching-learning process: intra-sentential code-mixing, intra-lexical code-mixing, and a change of pronunciation. Intra-sentential code-mixing was the dominant type used by English teachers in the teaching-learning process with 170 utterances, intra-lexical code mixing 12 utterances, and involving a change of pronunciation 14 utterances.While the reason English teachers used code mixing in teaching-learning process was to help their students understand them better because their students have poor ability in using English.
