Rationales of Using English to Teach English
XMLAbstract: The ability to use English in this era seems to be everybody’s need. Their motivations to learn to use English are to compete for job, to study overseas or to continue tertiary studies, to be translators, to be guides, to be teachers of English, and so on. Countless English courses of any levels are available almost everywhere. English courses in tertiary educations are to prepare the students with broader access for “IPTEK”. Then Students in schools are strongly required to learn English to pass “UN”. These are phenomena showing that English is in fact is a global and of everybody’s need. In terms of the global needs, Indonesian government in particular, has designed communicative curriculum, now called “KTSP” that recommends any kinds of communicative methods of communicative approach as a breakthrough towards communicative competence or ability to use English communicatively. In short, the education institutions: primary, or secondary, or tertiary, require the students strongly to learn to use rather than to know English. The implication of such global need and such learning process is that the teachers of English in Schools in particular are strongly required to use English as medium to teach English. This article therefore tries to discuss a number of rationales why teachers of English are required to use English to teach it and/or to interact with the students during classroom instruction. This article ends with recommendations dealing with how “PAUD” students in tertiary education are prepared with ability to communicate in English so that they are able to teach English to the early age children and provoke their interest to learn English.
