This thesis is Entitled “An Analysis of Grammatical Errors in translating short story from Indonesian into English by the 3rd semester students of English Study Program of Nusa Cendana University in the Academic Year of 2022/2023”. The aims of this study are (1) To know the grammatical errors committed by the 3rd Semester Students of the English Study Program of Nusa Cendana University in translating a short story? (2). To know the most frequent errors committed by the 3rd Semester Students of the English Study Program of Nusa Cendana University in translating the short story? (3). To know the possible causes of errors made by the 3rd Semester students of English Study Program of Nusa Cendana University in translating an Indonesian short story text into English. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The writer selected the 3rd semester students as the sample. In this study, the writer used two instruments. The first instrument was test in the form of translation a short story text. The last one of research, the writer to do interview. The writer analyzed the data by identifying and classifying the data. The
identified grammatical errors were classified based on Dulay’s theory, namely surface strategy taxonomy. There were four types of grammatical errors committed by the 3rd semester students of English study program in translating a short story from Indonesian into English. The most common of grammatical error committed by the students was Omission and Misformation errors, where such errors included the omission and misformation of pronoun, verb, singular and plural noun form, article, adver, and preposation. Based on the students’ answers to the questionare and interview, the writer found that there were three causes of error made by the students in translating a short story text from indonesian into English . Those are carelessness, first language interference, and translation.
