The Importance Of Speaking Skills In Debaters' Performances During Debating Championship In English Study Program Of Nusa Cendana University

This research aims to know the importance of speaking skills in the debaters’ performances during debating championship in English Study Program of Nusa Cendana University and to find out the problems encountered by the debaters related to speaking skills during debating championship and how they overcome such problems. The researcher formulated three research questions in this study: (1) what do the debaters think about the importance of speaking skills in their performances during debating championship? (2) what are the problems encountered by the debaters related to speaking skills during the debating championship? (3) what are the debaters’ efforts to overcome the problems? The research method that was used in this research was descriptive qualitative research method. The subject of this research were ten debaters in the English debate competition in the English Study Program on 19 to 20 March 2021. The researcher analysed the video of the debating championship and conducted interviews with ten debaters. The researcher presented the data in the form of a narrative description. This research found that: (1) Each debater had their own opinion about the importance of speaking skills in their performances during debating championship, but they were all agreed that speaking skills was so important for their performances. (2) The debaters faced some problems related to speaking skills or linguistics problem during the debating championship which were: lack of vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, fluency and accuracy. They also faced psychological problem which were: lack of confidence, afraid of making mistake, nervousness, lack of basic knowledge and also technical problem which was the limitation of the time in the debating championship. (3) All of the debaters had their own efforts to overcome the problems they faced in the debating championship, every method or technique they used was so effective to overcome all their problems that they encountered during debating championship.
