A Semiotic Analysis Of Symbols On Traditional King’s Graves In Raja Prailiu Village, East Sumba

This research is entitled “A Semiotic Analysis of Symbols on Traditional King’s Graves in Raja Prailiu Village, East Sumba. Focuses of this research are what symbols and the meaning of the symbols found on traditional graves. The objectives of the research are to find out the symbols and the meaning of the symbols on traditional king graves by using pierce theory. All the data gained are analyzed using descriptive qualitative method. The instruments used in this research are observation, interview using elicitation techniques from 3 informants. The result of the research showed that there are eleven symbols found on traditional graves, there are: roaster (manu wulu), horse (njara), crocodile ana wuya
rara, duck (ina redi) , deer (ruha), jewelry (lamba), Sun and moon (ama lodo na ina wulang), turtle (ana karawula), human (tau), coffin bearer (maduku pati), slaughterer (maduke), queen (papaha maramba). The writer hopes the further writer could find more symbols.
