A Survey On Common Language Learning Strategies (LLS) And Speaking Competence Employed By The Seventh-Semester Students Of The English Study Program Of Nusa Cendana University
XMLThis study investigates the most common learning strategy used by the majority of the seventh-semester students of the English Study Program of Nusa Cendana University. Also, to find out why they preferred the chosen strategy (s) that particularly influenced their speaking competence. The research implemented a descriptive research design using a survey to collect data. The survey data was gathered using two instruments: questionnaires and interviews. It was surveyed through 25 statements adopted from Oxford's (1990) theory. The analysis shows that the students have used six language learning strategies. However, cognitive, memory, compensation, and affective strategies are used more frequently (often and always used) than metacognitive and social strategies (never and rarely used). Moreover, cognitive strategies have become the most widely used strategies. It shows that 84% of total students confirmed their preference or tendency to use this strategy category; followed by memory and compensation strategies which represent total percentages of 74% and 72%, respectively; and affective strategy being the last high-used learning strategy in this study, with a percentage of 70%. On the contrary, metacognitive and social strategies were the least
frequently used ones, scoring 55% and 50%, respectively. The researcher concludes that the students reported using the chosen learning strategies to fit their particular learning situation. In addition, their use could help them achieve their learning goals more effectively as they
focus on their speaking competence through actions and practicing using the language individually. Thus, it could impact the ability to enhance their vocabulary and grammar knowledge, pronunciation, comprehension, and fluency, which are the main components required in speaking.
