An Analysis Speech Events Using Hyme’s Speaking Concept In Sabunese Traditional Marriage

This research is entitled: ‘An Analysis of Speech Events using Hyme’s speaking Concept in Sabunese Traditional Marriage’. It focuses on Hyme’s speaking concept along with an analysis of settings/scenes, participants, ends, acts of sequence, keys, instrumentalities, norms of interaction, and genre. The problem of this study is what are the elements of speech events in Hyme’s speaking concept in sabunese traditional marriage? This research aim is to find out the elements of speech events in Hyme’s speaking concept in sabunese traditional marriage. The method used was the qualitative descriptive method and the data resource was five informants in Enoraen village, East Amarasi sub-district, Kupang regency that have knowledge of the kenoto as the sabunese traditional marriage. The data collection techniques were observation, interview, recording, and note-taking. The data analysis techniques were transcribing, identifying, and describing. The result shows that the elements of speech events using Hyme’s Speaking concept used in the sabunese traditional marriage are (a) setting and scenes were held in the bride’s home and
the situation are semi-formal, kindship, and serious, and (b) participants were the people sat in a traditional marriage including bride and groom, groom’s parents, bride’s parents, mone ub’ba (spokesman) of bride and groom, mone hebi’li kenoto (kenoto carrier), mone pili dida (uncle’s bride), banni hau kenoto (kenoto recipient), mone pereda (government emissary) and inner family from bride and groom as well as the other extended family of the bride and groom family and also God as the protector, (c) ends was agreement to hold a traditional marriage ceremony, (d) acts of sequence of the kenoto was started by the spokesman the groom who delivered the opening then it was continued by the spokesman’s bride. (e) key they were all in a serious situation, (f) instrumentalities was using code-mixing in delivering the speech and used traditional Sabunese clothing, (g) norms of interaction and interpretation were decency, adat, and moral norms used in the process of proposing the traditional marriage to ensure their commitment to live together and (h) genre was a proposal that showed a serious claim of reasoning of an action and there were sermons in oral speech.
