An Error Analysis In Using English Adjective Phrases Made By The Eleventh Graders Of SMAS PGRI Swasthika Lewoleba In The Academic Year Of 2022/2023

The aims of this study are (1) To find out the types of errors that were made in using English adjective phrases made by the eleventh graders of SMAS PGRI Swasthika Lewoleba in the academic year of 2022/2023. (2) To know the most common errors that the students made. (3) To know the possible causes of errors in using English adjective phrases made by the eleventh graders of SMAS PGRI Swasthika Lewoleba in the academic year of 2022/2023. This study used qualitative-quantitative method (mix method). The subject of this study was the eleventh graders of SMAS PGRI Swasthika Lewoleba in the academic year of 2022/2023. The eleventh graders consisted of 3 classes with the total number as many as 82 students. The writer used a purposive sampling technique to select the participants, who were students from Social Science class, which had 25 students. The data collection techniques used in this study were a test, and an interview. The writer classified the types of errors committed by the students based on Dulay’s (1982) theory, namely surface strategy taxonomy. The finding showed that there were 58 total of errors made by the eleventh graders of SMAS PGRI Swasthika Lewoleba in their descriptive writing. They were 5 errors (8,62%) of omission errors, 14 errors (24,13%) of addition errors, 13 errors (22,42%) of misformation errors, 26 (44,83%) of misordering errors. Based on the students’ answers on the interview, the writer discovered some causes of errors in the use of English adjective phrase: the lack of knowledge and understanding related to English adjective phrase, lack of motivation, and less practice. In addition, the writer found three sources of errors. They were carelessness, first language interference, and translation. Therefore, this study is important for the other researchers to conduct further research dealing with the same object because frequently the students still have difficulties in constructing adjective phrase.
