An Error Analysis In Using English Prepositions Of Time Committed By The Eleventh Graders Of SMAN 9 Kupang

This study aims to analyze errors made by the eleventh graders of SMAN 9 Kupang in using prepositions of time and to find out the difficulties encountered by the students in using prepositions of time. The research implemented both qualitative and quantitative method (mixed-method). It was conducted in the eleventh graders of SMAN 9 Kupang. The data was taken from 23 students who were majoring in a language program. Techniques used to collect the data were structured interviews and multiple-choice tests. The test consists of 40 items. Prepositions of time in the test were "in", "at", "on", ―since”, ―for‖, and ―after‖. The quantitative data gathered from the multiple-choice test were analyzed to determine the students‘ errors in using those kinds of prepositions. The results showed that the students committed quite many errors in using prepositions of time. Moreover, the result of the interview was functioned to get qualitative data to answer the second research question. The findings revealed that the students experienced the same difficulties in using them. These difficulties were lack of understanding, unable to distinguish English prepositions of time usage in the right context, and having little awareness in learning the appropriate use of English prepositions. Moreover, there were also numerous numbers of prepositions in English and it is quite hard for them to pay attention at their
specific function.
